What if we told you that it is possible <strong>to donate computing capacity<\/strong> to learn more about <strong>Covid-19<\/strong>? Yes, it is possible. With <a href=\"https:\/\/foldingathome.org\/?lng=en\">Folding@home<\/a>, a project that uses distributed computing to <strong>study the origin of different diseases<\/strong>, including cancer, Ebola and Alzheimer&#8217;s but also phenomena such as protein folding, drug design and other types of molecular dynamics.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_image et_pb_image_367 et_animated et-waypoint\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t<span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/temp_new.vmenginelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Folding_Cover-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Folding_Cover\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" class=\"wp-image-33952\" \/><\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_cta_262 et_pb_promo  et_pb_text_align_center et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_promo_description et_multi_view_hidden\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_button_wrapper\"><a class=\"et_pb_button et_pb_promo_button\" href=\"https:\/\/foldingathome.org\/?lng=en\" target=\"_blank\">Folding@home<\/a><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1341  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p><strong>Folding@home<\/strong> uses the unused computing power of thousands of PCs owned by volunteers, who have decided to install and run special software on their computers. Its main purpose is to determine the <strong>mechanisms of protein folding<\/strong> , which is the process by which <strong>proteins<\/strong> reach their final three-dimensional structure, and to examine the causes that lead to protein misfolding.<br \/>Since February 2020, <strong>Folding@home<\/strong> has turned its attention to Covid-19 and more than <strong>200,000 people around the world have donated their computing power<\/strong> to a cause as important as the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1342  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>It should be noted that this global collaboration is the first widely distributed computing resource. Technically, it is a supercomputer capable of doing a quintillion of calculations per second, which is generating datasets of unprecedented size, and which <strong>Folding@home<\/strong> is making available to researchers around the world through the &#8220;Open Data Registry on <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/it\/\"><br \/>\n  <strong>Amazon Web Services<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1343  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>&#8220;<em>Our simulations are essentially a huge number of images of what a protein looks like,&#8221; <\/em>comments project director <strong>Greg Bowman<\/strong> .  <em>That&#8217;s why we need so much computing power, and it&#8217;s why we&#8217;re making data available in the AWS cloud. We need as many brains as possible to work on it in parallel, in order to reap the benefits<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_cta_263 et_pb_promo  et_pb_text_align_center et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_promo_description et_multi_view_hidden\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_button_wrapper\"><a class=\"et_pb_button et_pb_promo_button\" href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/it\/blogs\/compute\/foldinghome-infectious-disease-research-with-spot-instances\/\" target=\"_blank\">AWS supports Folding@home<\/a><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_image et_pb_image_368 et_animated et-waypoint\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t<span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/temp_new.vmenginelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Folding40home-project-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Folding@home-project-\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" class=\"wp-image-33954\" \/><\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1344  et_pb_text_align_center et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><H2>  The result  <\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1345  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>Thanks to the Cloud, it is possible to access information and download it quickly. <strong>Suffice<\/strong> it to say that Folding@home has produced <strong>more than 100,000<\/strong> times more data on the Covid-19 virus than those typically created for other simulation studies and before <strong>Folding@home<\/strong> made this data available on the &#8220;AWS Open Data Registry&#8221;, accessing it was incredibly expensive and complex, given the size of the files. Often, this required sending <strong>physical hard drives<\/strong> to share a data set.<br \/>The program aims to democratize access to data by making it available for analysis on AWS, to develop new techniques that reduce the cost of working with data, and to encourage the development of communities that benefit from access to shared datasets.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1346  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>&#8220;<em>We are actively using this data for drug discovery<\/em> ,&#8221; says Greg Bowman  <em>We have products in the testing phase and we hope to <strong>develop a new clinical trial in the next six months<\/strong>.
